JAZZ EXPLOSION, showcased the best of the PISD jazz bands May 13 at the Fair Theatre. Selections included a combo of jazz classics, funk and rock-n-roll favorites. PHS Spring Band Concert was Tuesday, May 13 at the Ollie Liner Center.

Former band directors Barry Hurt and O.T. Ryan along with Richard Davidson, son of long time director R.C. “Chief” Davidson, handed out three of the five scholarships awarded to senior band students.
Scholarships winners included: LeaKay Adams, Chris Stokes Memorial Scholarship, $1,000; Matthew Torrez, Cliff Franklin Jazz Scholarship, $500; Rachel Naron, Barry Hurt Scholarship, $1,500; Hailey Travis, O.T. Ryan Scholarship, $1,500; and Adam Owens, Chief Davidson Scholarship, $2,000.
Band Director David Fortenberry announced a theme of rock and roll music selected from artists such as Deep Purple, Metallica, Styx and The Doobie Brothersfor for the fall marching show.
18 students were named Texas Musical Scholars based on their academic achievement and participation in solo and ensemble events.
Students honored were LeaKay Adams, percussion; Josh Chapa, percussion; Mark Cunningham, percussion; Elizabeth Espino, flute; Kate Harrell, oboe; Breanna Hatch, bassoon; Alaina Heine, bass clarinet; Kathryn Hutto, percussion; Leslie Landeros, percussion; Kolby McCormick, percussion; Adam Owens, French horn; Kylan Riley, percussion; Selinda Selinas, percussion; Daniel Stanfield, tuba; Hailey Travis, percussion; Luis Trujillo, percussion; Daniel Weller, alto saxophone; and Hallie Wells, percussion.
All-Region Band members include Dawna Garcia, trumpet; Saul Gomez, bass clarinet; Kate Harrell, oboe; Andrew Moralez, trombone; Josh Olmos, clarinet; Adam Owens, French horn; Kylan Riley, percussion; Daniel Stanfield, tuba; Matthew Torres, French horn; Daniel Weller, alto saxophone; and Keyesha Wright, clarinet.
Named to the All-Region Orchestra were Breanna Hatch, bassoon; Andrew Moralez, trombone; and Josh Olmos, clarinet.
Honored for All-Region Jazz Band were Josh Olmos, Emily Arias, Matthew Torres, Joseph Sena, Joseph Segovia, Lyndzee Hernandez, Matthew Vail, Caleb Herrera, Vicki Hernandez and William Hooper.
The Drum Major Choice Award went to freshman Colin Ward.
Plainview High School Bands recently competed in the UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest. The PHS Honor Band and Symphonic Band claimed Sweepstakes awards. The Concert Band received a Division II rating in concert and a Division I rating in sight reading. The Cadet Band received Division II ratings in both concert and sightreading.
