BULLDOGS DROP SEASON OPENER TO MONTEREY

The Monterey Plainsmen scored on their first drive of the game and tallied a safety on Plainview's first play from scrimmage on the way to a 26-0 win over the Bulldogs in the season opener for both teams Saturday morning at Lowery Field in Lubbock.

The game was scheduled to be played Friday night, but heavy rain and lightening postponed the game until Saturday. Both teams were warming up when game officials sent them to the locker room following a lightening strike. UIL rules require the teams to stay off the field until 30 minutes following a strike. After the 30-minute clock was restarted about five times, Plainview coach Marty McClintock and Monterey coach James Morton agreed to postpone the game to 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

Monterey drove 70 yards to go up 7-0 on the openin grive of the game. Following the Plainsman kickoff, Plainview attempted to run a halfback pass on its first play from scrimmage, and running back Enrique Martinez was whisled for intentional grounding while trhying to throw the ball in the endzone under heavy pressure. The Plainview scored another touchdown in the second quarter to go up 16-0 at the half and added ten more in the second half to cruise to the victory.

The Bulldogs travel to Canyon Friday night to take on the Randall Raiders. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. KKYN will broadcast at 7:00.

In other action involving PHS sports this pas weekend, the Lady Bulldog volleyball team finished forth in the Silver Bracker of the Wayland Baptist Tournament.

The Plainview Bulldogs swept the Caprock Longhorns in the bidistrict playoff series, winning 5-4.
